Salma Hayek breastfeeds a stranger's baby in Africa

Africa has a strong effect on female celebrities. Madonna adopted a youngster after a visit to Malawi, while Angelina Jolie insisted on giving birth to a child in Namibia.

But Hollywood was agog this morning after From Dusk Till Dawn actress Salma Hayek breastfed a stranger's baby during visit to war-torn Sierra Leone.

The 42-year-old, who has a one-year-old daughter Valentina, was touring a hospital when she came across a mother who was unable to feed her baby boy.

Although TV cameras were there from ABC's Nightline news programme, the actress did not hesitate.

Hayek said: 'The baby was perfectly healthy, but the mother did not have any milk. He was very hungry - I was weaning my daughter Valentina, but I still had a lot of milk, so I breast-fed the baby.'

She added: 'It was amazing because he's really looking at me and he's very little. My baby is one year so she can suck a lot harder.'

Hayek later admitted she worried about betraying her daughter, but she added: 'I thought about it, am I being disloyal to my child by giving my milk away?

'I actually think my baby would be very proud to be able to share her milk and when she grows up I will make sure she continues to share and be generous caring person.'

She went on to recall how her great-grandmother had helped out a woman in a similar fashion.

She explained: 'My great-grandmother was in a Mexican village and they found a woman in the street inconsolably crying and the baby was also crying, crying, crying.

'My great-grandmother went up to her and said "What is the matter?" and the mother said, "She is very, very hungry and I have no more milk".

'And in the street my great-grandmother took the baby and breastfed that baby who instantly stopped crying and went peacefully to sleep.

'It was amazing (to breastfeed another child) because I was really impressed by (my great-grandmother's) story. I'm here in Sierra Leone and I was able to feed a baby that was very hungry.'

In developing countries, doctors encourage women to breastfeed for up to two years, because the food available cannot match the nutrition from a mother's milk.

Since becoming a UNICEF spokesperson last year, Salma has travelled to many developing countries to raise awareness of the Pampers Tetanus programme.

Sierra Leone has the highest infant and child death rate in the world, with one in five children dying before they reach their fifth birthday.

Twenty one per cent of infant deaths in Sierra Leone are down to Tetanus, which can be prevented by a simple, routine injection which all children have in the western world.

Salma Hayek nearly bursts out of her hard-working dress

Hollywood star Salma Hayek looked dangerously close to spilling out of her dress as she filmed the TV show 30 Rock in Brooklyn in New York City.

The actress's fashionably vibrant orange dress struggled under the strain of her Rubenesque figure, its plunging neckline only just managing to preserve her modesty.

Under control? Salma Hayek's vibrant orange dress struggled to control her post-pregnancy curves as she filmed a TV show in New York

Earlier this week the actress nearly exposed herself as she appeared on a German TV show.

Her ornate dress's plunging neckline nearly gave way as she lent forward while talking to the host.

But yesterday there was no time for fooling around as Salma threw herself into the role.

Between takes - Salma is making a guest appearance on the show - there was only one thing on her mind - her beautiful baby girl Valentina.

She cuddled the adorable 11-month old, whose father is French billionaire François-Henri Pinault, as she waited for her next scene.

'You're half lesbian?' Eamonn Holmes makes embarrassing TV gaffe as Salma Hayek

Eamonn Holmes was left red-faced today after wrongly announcing Hollywood actress Salma Hayek was a lesbian on live television.

The 48-year-old presenter made the embarrassing gaffe while interviewing the Ugly Betty star on This Morning, which he hosts once a week with his partner Ruth Langsford.

The Belfast native was obviously struggling to understand Hayek's Mexican accent and thought she had 'come out' when he misheard her describing her Lebanese background.

Oops: Holmes is embarrassed after he realises he has mis-heard Hayek

The Oscar-nominated actress, 42, was appearing on the ITV morning show to publicise her campaign to eradicate tetanus.

After introducing the film star, Holmes commented on her surname - which she inherited from her father Sami Hayek, who is Lebanese.

He said: 'Hayek doesn't sound very Mexican.'

As Hayek tried to explain that she was half Lebanese, Holmes put his foot in it when he asked: 'You're a lesbian?'

Fortunately, she saw the funny side and smiled politely before learning foward and saying 'Lebanese' slowly enough for Holmes to understand.

A sheepish Holmes replied: 'Oh sorry, i thought you were half lesbian. Forgive me.'

Hayek has teamed up with UNICEF and Pampers for the international campaign to eradicate tetanus in mothers and babies over the next five years.

Hayek has been travelling in Europe since last month with her one-year-old baby girl Valentina.

Earlier this week, Hayek was spotted spending time with her ex-fiance and Valentina's father, Francois-Henri Pinault, who is based in Paris.

Recently separated Salma Hayek shops at erotic bondage boutique

Newly single Salma Hayek has been consoling herself with a spot of shopping - of a distinctly sexual nature.

The Ugly Betty star indulged herself at erotic boutique Coco de mer, which stocks luxury bondage gear, designer sex aids and risqué underwear.

Her assistant carried the 41-year-old star's purchases, packed in a tissue-lined bag emblazoned with the stores' logo.

The store was set up by Sam Roddick, daughter of Body Shop founder Anita Roddick, and states its philosophy as being ' unashamedly about sex'.

On the website shoppers can buy everything from leather corsets, costing up to £800, to erotic sculptures for the home.

Salma looked slim and stylish, dressed in a printed dress and open-toe heels, as she visited the store on the hip Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

Just three weeks ago the actress and billionaire Frenchman François-Henri Pinault announced they had called off their engagement - because of the 5,700 mile gulf between them.

While Salma's lived in Los Angeles with the couple's 11-month-old daughter, Valentina Paloma, her partner was living in Paris.

They issued a joint statement saying this had made their relationship unworkable.

Oh baby! Newly single Salma Hayek shows off her bundle of joy

Just two weeks after calling off her engagement, Salma Hayek is a picture of health as she steps out with her 10-month-old daughter.

The Oscar-winning actress and her lookalike baby girl Valentina enjoyed a day out shopping in Beverly Hills, California, yesterday.

Last month, the 41-year-old announced she had called off her engagement to French billionaire François-Henri Pinault, Valentina's father.

Miss Hayek has been living for most of the past year in Los Angeles, with her daughter, while Mr Pinault lived some 5,700 miles away in Paris, France.

He is known for working regular 12 hour days, putting his all into his family businesses.

Miss Hayek and Mr Pinault met in Venice in May 2006, and, a year later, announced they were getting married and having a child together.

Valentina, Miss Hayek’s first child, was born last year in LA. She was a third child for Mr Pinault, who has two children from a marriage which ended in 2004.

Miss Hayek admitted in April that the couple’s constant commuting between Los Angeles and Paris was odd, saying: 'To most women it's crazy. But every relationship is unique.'

Despite not being officially married, Miss Hayek is now expected to benefit from a multi-million pound settlement from Mr Pinault.
